Everything you need to know about furnace filters

Furnace filters are often overlooked during the maintenance process.

That’s why it is important to understand how critical a filter can be for furnace efficiency and the overall air quality in your home.

Here is everything you need to know…

Furnace filters catch dust, hair and other debris in the air before the air enters the blower fan in your furnace. This subsequently improves the air quality in your home by preventing this debris from recirculating in the air.

Not replacing your furnace filter has a number of repercussions:

  • You run the risk of clogging your furnace. If this happens, your furnace will shut down.

There are two things to note when choosing the right furnace filter.

  • Know the correct filter size that your furnace requires.
  • The higher the MERV rating, the better. MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) is a quality rating (ranging from 1-16) that tells you how effective the filter is at catching debris such as pet dander, dust, bacteria, and pollen – among others.

A1 recommends that homeowners replace their furnace filter annually, with the following exceptions:

  • You have had construction work done in your home since your last filter replacement.
  • You have several pets living in your home.
  • You suffer from allergies.
  • You keep your windows and doors open throughout the summer.
