Air Conditioner Parts Definitions
To get the most out of your air conditioner and the service that is done to it, it’s best to understand the system and the air conditioner parts themselves.
We often hear from customers that they may not know what certain parts or procedures are and a base knowledge of them can really help you understand how to get the most out of your heating and cooling systems. Below are some of the main air conditioner parts that we get questions about:
Air Handler: This is basically a furnace-lite. It circulates air in your home and can sometimes have a supplemental heating function. It is mostly used in conjunction with heat pumps.
Blower Motor: The driving force behind the air that keeps you comfortable. It’s important to take good care of this part.
Compressor: The compressor circulates the refrigerant in the system under pressure, which concentrates the heat it contains.
Condensation Drain Pipe: Because of the evaporation and dehumidification stage, there can be some condensation. This will lead directly to a drain to ensure there are no liquids leaking into your living space.
Condenser Coil: This is the part people are most familiar with, it’s basically the walls of your outdoor unit (condenser). The condenser is a device or unit that changes refrigerant from its gaseous to its liquid state, by cooling it. In doing so, unwanted heat will then transfer to the condenser coolant.
Ductless: An air conditioning system also known as a mini or multi-split. It does not use conventional supply and return vents but instead uses several indoor units to add greater efficiency and control.
Evaporator Coil: Your evaporator coil is indoors and is installed with whatever circulates your air (furnace or air handler). Inside the coil, refrigerant from the system evaporates as it absorbs heat from the indoor air that passes over it.
Expansion Valve: This controls the flow of refrigerant.
Filter: Your main filter will be in your furnace or air handler. They help reduce the amount of dirt, debris and allergens that enter your home through this system.
Furnace: You know what a furnace is, but many people are unaware that your furnace still runs in the summer if you don’t have an air handler. It circulates the air throughout your home.
Register: The final piece from which your air is distributed.
Supply Air Duct: The highways for your air to travel throughout your home.
