Beware of Pushy Furnace Scams
The Ontario government banned unsolicited door-to-door sales of most heating and air services back in March after many years of it being a serious issue. However, the recent story about a Toronto man with a mental disability being tricked into signing expensive heating and cooling contracts for everything from maintenance plans to HEPA filters proves that this is still a problem everyone needs to be on the watch for.
The Scam
All over the country, Canadians continue to report that people are knocking on their doors wanting to inspect their furnace, water heater or other HVAC systems. If the homeowner lets them inside, these “inspectors” will often miraculously find a serious problem with the equipment and will try and talk the homeowners into expensive repairs or replacements.
Don’t Sign or Agree to Anything
If someone comes to your home wanting access to any of your heating or cooling equipment—don’t let them in. In addition, never sign or agree to anything. This type of furnace scam works by using high-pressure sales tactics on homeowners and trying to scare them into signing.
Ask for Identification
Usually, these pushy salespeople will mention the Canadian government or rebates that are available, but they are not associated with the government in any way. If you’re unsure about the legitimacy of someone who shows up at your door, you can always contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre by calling 1-888-495-8501.
