How to Create Home Made Funnel Cake

What is a Funnel Cake?

  • This traditional dessert is popularly served at funfairs such an Canada’s Wonderland and restaurants like Montana’s Cook House
  • It is known for it’s delicious crispy doughy goodness combined with the freshness of strawberries and sweetness of vanilla ice cream
  • It is called a funnel cake because “funnel” is used as a method to pour the batter in to the oil

The Ingredients

  • The basic ingredients of a funnel cake are as follows:
    • 1 egg
    • ¾ of milk
    • 1 cup flour
    • 1 tsp baking soda
    • 2 tbsp sugar
    • Pinch of salt
    • Cooking oil 500ml (preferably canola)

*These ingredients serves 3 medium sized plates*

The Toppings

  • Toppings include, but are not limited to:
    • Icing Sugar
    • Fresh strawberries and blue berries
    • Strawberry, caramel or chocolate sauce
    • Vanilla Ice Cream
    • Sliced almonds or crushed peanuts

Utensils you will need

  • Mixing Bowl
  • Electric Mixer or Wire Whisk
  • Measuring Cups
  • Frying Pan
  • Tong
  • Paper Towel
  • Ziploc Freezer Bag as the funnel

Cooking Instructions

  • Pour the 500ml of cooking oil in a single serve frying pan or until the frying pan’s brim is almost full
  • Set the stove temperature to medium high
  • In a mixing bowl, combine 1 cup of flour, 1 egg, ¾ cup of milk, 2 tbsp. of sugar, pinch of salt, and 1 tsp of baking soda
  • Mix the ingredients with an electric mixer or wire whisk
  • Take a Ziploc freezer bag and pour the funnel cake batter you have created in to the bag
  • Cut a small hole at the tip of the bag and squeeze the batter content in the hot cooking oil creating a circular motion
  • Once the batter begins to turn golden brown flip the funnel cake on the opposite side with your tong to evenly distribute the heat
  • Once the batter turns golden brown, it is time take to take it out of the oil
  • Ensure that the plate is covered in paper towel to remove any excess oil

Applying the Toppings

  • Take a small spoon or mini strainer and apply powdered sugar all over the funnel cake
  • Add the sauce of your preference
    • (Strawberry, chocolate or caramel)
  • Slice 2 strawberries length wise and place on top of the funnel cake
  • Top it off with vanilla ice cream and add more sauce if preferred
