Protect the AC During Home Renovations

home renovation

Summer is the perfect time to get started on an exciting home renovation project, but have you thought about how this could affect your air conditioning system? While it might not seem like a big concern, there are a number of important precautions you should follow to protect your AC during your home improvement project.

Dust Danger
The biggest danger facing your AC during home renovations is exposure to dust, dirt and debris. Your cooling system needs to be protected during renovation projects due to the amount of dust and other contaminants that can get stirred up. Not only can dust restrict airflow, it can also create problems with the filter, coils and motors in the cooling system.

Tips to Keep Dust out of Your AC

  • Turn Off System: One of the best ways to protect the AC during home renovations is to turn off the system completely. Although it’s tempting to use the AC during hot summertime renovations, keeping it switched off will eliminate the circulation of air and help prevent dust from entering ductwork and harming the system.
  • Cover Vents & Registers: Sawdust, drywall and other construction debris can wreak havoc if they get into your system so it’s good practice to cover vents and registers before construction work begins.
  • Maintain a Clean Space: Keep your work area as clean and tidy as possible throughout the renovation project. While turning off the cooling system and covering vents makes a big difference, you can also protect your system by doing the messiest of the renovation work outside or in a garage. Also, get in the habit of regularly dusting and vacuuming the work area and use plastic tarps to keep debris from being spread to other areas of the home.
  • Change Air Filter: Even if you follow the above precautions, your air filter could still become clogged with renovation dust. It’s best to change your air filter once the renovation is completed in order to prevent restricted airflow and damage to the heating and cooling system.

Schedule AC Maintenance
The most important tip to make sure your AC is unaffected by renovation work is to schedule routine cooling maintenance with a certified HVAC technician as soon as the project is finished. Having your system inspected and maintained by a professional will give you peace of mind and allow you to enjoy your newly renovated home to the fullest!
